Pie in the Park raises $13,128
In 2011, the Village Green Foundation’s community center project was awarded $1 million from the Washington state Building Communities Fund and $1 million from the C. Keith Birkenfeld Trust. To date, $3.5 million of the $5.2 million project has been raised.
The Picnic Pavilion was completed in the past month. Recently, Pie in the Park raised an additional $13,128.
There are many opportunities for volunteers who want to be involved with the Village Green project. Three in particular are (1) ongoing maintenance of the grounds, (2) development of the Pea Patch garden, (3) tennis court and/or playground maintenance.
Friends of the Library focus on community center library
Friends of the Library is focusing on the new library that will be located in the community center building at the Village Green. The organization has pledged a lot of money and, most recently, an additional $30,000. Book sales are one of the Friends’ primary fundraising activities.
On Oct. 20, Friends of the Library will host the first annual Trivia Challenge. Tickets will be $15 per person. You can compete individually or as a team.
The event will include event prizes, drawings and door prizes, and a silent auction. Appetizers and desserts will be served and there will be a no-host wine/beer bar.
Open Days proposed for Heronswood
There is a plan to incorporate an educational component on Tribal uses of plants (medicinal, herbal, fiber, food). They’ve spoken to Robert Jones, the architect who designed the garden, about helping to incorporate Tribal art into the garden. The two buildings will be made available to rent. Master Gardeners have made contact with the Tribe expressing an interest in being involved with the project.
The current plan is to have “Open Days” and charging a $10 admission. Periodically, a piece of the garden will be identified as the project/area to be restored. People who have previously purchased plants from the facility will be contacted in hopes that their plants are mature and ready to split and share with the garden.
SoundRunner closes, dredging applications under way
The SoundRunner ferry service shut down on Sept. 28. The commission voted unanimously to end the project and dispose of the assets. The boats will most likely be transferred to other agencies who routinely receive Federal Transit Administration funding.
The dredging project permit application process for the northwest side of the marina is under way. An eel grass study is done. A multi-agency meeting was held to organize all of the application details.
Summer hours at the port are over. The transient dock was full nearly every weekend since May and last week the Poulsbo Yacht Club brought 35 boats to Kingston for a visit. Concerts in the Cove were a huge success drawing visitors from all over the region. Fuel sales have been extremely successful in spite of the high prices. Staff members are beginning to get ready for Buccaneer Homecoming, Holiday Lights and other fall events. Next month, the budget preparation cycle for 2013 begins.
New business
Walt Elliott said that the circulation study on State 104 should be done in October.
