Kitsap Community Resources housing services personnel are seeing a huge increase in the demand for items needed to care for babies.
“We have an exceptionally large group of single parents right now in our housing program who are raising small children (some with three babies in diapers all at once) and the charitable services in our area are unable to support this huge financial burden,” said Sheryl Piercy of housing and homeless services for Kitsap Community Resources. “The results leave our clients without access to resources we are usually able to count on when families need such items. It has become more than the regular community agencies are able support and the results has left our homeless families scrambling to find solutions for such needs.”
The local food banks are only able to provide three to five diapers per month to each family, according to Piercy.
“With the flu season upon us, that is about an hour and a half and the diapers are gone,” she said.
The organization is reaching out to the community for help.
“If anyone in the community or with one of the churches is able to donate diapers and wipes, or has access to a business that would want to donate diapers, we are in dire need,” she said. “If such a donation is available, we can pick them up. However, if the donations could be delivered to our office at 1201 Park Ave., we could get them to those in need much faster since our housing department has been stretched to its limit with all the new programs we are able to offer and the needs of our families.”
