The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting near Esquire Hills Elementary School in Central Kitsap the morning of May 7.
KCSO assured the public via social media that the incident posed no danger to students, staff or the public, but did station a deputy at the school “out of an abundance of caution.”
At 9:13 a.m., law enforcement went to an address at Wembley Avenue NE between Troy Lane NE and Coventry Court NE. A woman was found injured at the scene and was taken to St. Michael Medical Center for treatment. SWAT team members, detectives and officers searched the surrounding area for the suspect or pertinent information for over three hours. At 12:40 p.m., law enforcement concluded the search without locating a suspect.
“Detectives are trying to determine whether the shooting happened the way deputies were told it happened,” KCSO public information officer Kevin McCarty said the day of the incident.
McCarty provided an update two days later saying detectives found there had been no intruder in the home where the shooting occurred, and that no suspects or additional witnesses are being sought. The weapon was recovered, and the victim is cooperating with the investigation. Pending lab results could still lead to criminal charges, he said.
