Olympic College to take kids on an Edventure.

Summer is a time for fun in the sun and for kids to get away from school, but with parents still needing to work, it can become a time of extreme boredom — enter Olympic College (OC).

For six years, the OC Continuing Education Edventure program at the Poulsbo campus has given fourth- through 12th-grade students a chance to learn, but not the boring, old subjects they deal with throughout the year.

This summer, for the first time ever, the program has expanded to the Bremerton campus, back to the Shelton campus and includes five new course offerings, according to Jackie Lorenz, coordinator of the OC continuing education program.

“The courses offered are all courses that regular credit-bearing students take throughout the school year, with the exception of LEGO Robotics,” she said.

Wendy Miles, director of OC’s military and continuing education, thinks the program has more to offer than standard summertime programs.

“It is a safe place for them to be,” she said. “Plus it gets them thinking beyond grade school.”

The five new programs to choose from include:

• 3-D Animation – OC faculty, Laurie George, will work with students using Maya software, an industry standard, to make models and do animation.

• Music Video Production – OC faculty, Laurie George, will work with students to make a music video. The course will cover shooting around campus and editing the video.

• Creative Creations – Participants will create a variety of masks and puppets from a variety of cultures.

• BookArts – Students will learn the process involved creating a variety of books to use for journals, gifts or recording dreams and aspirations. The week will include the creation of one first-edition work of art book using their writing and/or visual art skills to be shared with the group.

• Exploring Guitar – Students will join intermediate guitarists and bass players to explore different styles of rock and blues. Students will play in groups to enhance rhythm and solo techniques.

Topics offered in previous years, including beginning and intermediate LEGO Robotics, beginning and intermediate Web Design, beginning and intermediate Flash Animation and beginning Digital Photography and Graphics, also will still be available.

New to this year’s OC Edventure program is the Lunch Club. This option, for busy families, will have OC staff supervise your child during the one-hour lunch break between programs. The cost for this service is $25 and students are required to bring a non-perishable sack lunch.

Classes will be held June through August and cost $119 per session.
