What a remarkable season this is turning out to be for the Kingston Farmers Market.
Each week, 45 to 55 vendors are setting up, with plenty of fresh, local produce — onions, broccoli, beans, carrots, beets, potatoes, blackberries, squash, salad greens, and lettuce, flowers, herbs, breads and sweets, choclate, cheese, to name a few. The weather seems to be more reliably sunny too.
The library tent for Story Time, which is open from about 10 a.m. noon, has hit its groove, with kids from ages 4 to 7 settling in for a cozy read with Wolfle and Kingston Library volunteers. During August, we’re looking forward to more scattered activities for youngsters, including juggling and balloon twisting.
August also brings two special events: Kingston Farmers Market’s 21st birthday celebration on Aug. 21; and the special ballot election for the Village Green Metropolitan Park District. Ballots are due August 17. The market board took the unusual step of endorsing this ballot measure.
We believe that a new community center with an expanded library, meeting rooms, senior center, and Boys & Girls Club will benefit Kingston and each of us that lives here. Please vote.
This is the musical lineup for August markets:
Aug. 7: Easy Ridin’ Grandpas: Celtic contra dance ensemble.
Aug. 14: Soft Majesty: Beautiful 12-string pop duo.
Aug. 21: Blond MoeJoe Johnson: Blues and folk.
Aug. 28: Jim Bybee: Lovely looped layered finger-picked guitar.
Last month, we enjoyed the July 4 special market and Christmas in July with a visit from our Northwest Summer Santa. We hosted a donated live Christmas Tree which was, in turn, donated to the Kingston Village Green. There were tree ornaments for kids to make (many of them taken home and some put on the Christmas tree) and donations to the Kingston Food Banks.
A raffle for market baskets raised more than $100 for local food banks with six lucky winners.
Come help us celebrate nature’s summer bounty, and celebrate our farmers market 21st birthday party on Aug. 21 — with birthday cake to give away and a special tribute to twenty one years of wonderful vendors, wonderful Saturdays, and the heart of our wonderful community.
