KINGSTON — Two soon-to-be graduates of Kingston High School are the recipients of scholarships from the Greater Kingston Kiwanis Club.
Samantha Randall and Maren Gunnell were both selected for the $3,000 scholarships. “We wanted to reward deserving students that have made contributing to their community a priority in their lives,” Kiwanis Foundation President Pete DeBoer said.
The main criteria for the selection were students demonstrating significant involvement in community service activities.
The scholarships are dedicated to the memories of Robert “Bud” Meredith and Sylvester “Cy” Wyse, both founding members of the club.
According to club and selection board member Sheila Walters, the selection board had a difficult time selecting the recipients of this year’s scholarships. The board had 11 candidates for the award.
“All of the candidates and their families should be very proud of their achievements,” Walters said in a club press release. “Each year I am impressed by the service commitment of the young people who apply.”
Funding for the scholarships came from club fundraisers, such as the annual berry sale and Mustand raffle — both going on now. The club’s newspaper recycling bin in front of the Kingston IGA and contributions from local businesses and individuals also provided for the scholarship.
