Aaron Elkins, former anthropologist and now an award-winning mystery writer, will give a reading from 7-8 p.m. April 8 downstairs in the Kingston Community Center. The event is sponsored by the Kingston Friends of the Library.

Elkins, who lives on the Olympic Peninsula, was awarded an Edgar Allan Poe Award by the Mystery Writers of America in 1988 for his book, “Old Bones.” His major continuing book series features a forensic anthropologist-detective, Gideon Oliver. He is also the author of the acclaimed novel, “Loot,” which deals with the modern-day consequences of Nazi art plundering during World War II. His book, “Turncoat,” explores a similar subject and was optioned by Hollywood for a possible movie.

The public is invited to the free event. Refreshments will be provided.

Friends’ book sale April 26

The Friends of the Kingston Library will host their annual spring book sale April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. downstairs in the Kingston Community Center. The sale will be open to Friends of the Library members only at 9 a.m.

Hardcovers and trade paperbacks will sell for $1; other paperbacks and children’s books go for 50 cents. There will be a few collectible books sold at higher prices.

At 2 p.m., any books left will go for $5 per bag.

Until the Friends’ book sale, donations of books, compact discs, DVDs, video tapes and cassettes are still being accepted and can be dropped off at the Kingston library during normal operating hours. Proceeds from the book sale help fund the Summer Reading program, guest authors and provide seed money for a new library.

Other events at the Kingston library

Kingston Friends of the Library meets at 10 a.m. April 1.

Kingston Book Discussion Group meets 10:30 a.m.-noon April 2 to discuss “The Knitting Circle” by Ann Hood. In this novel, after the sudden loss of her only child, Mary Baxter joins a knitting circle as a way to fill the empty hours and lonely days. The women welcome her, each teaching Mary a new knitting technique and, as they do, reveal their own personal stories of loss, love, and hope.

Storytime for Little Ones, for children 18 months to 6 years old, takes place Mondays at 3 p.m. April 7, 14, 21, 28. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
