A 38-year-old Kingston man was arrested Tuesday morning, after leading law enforcement on a 14-mile chase through North Kitsap in a stolen newspaper delivery van.

The Sheriffs Office received a report of a van stolen from Kingston Arco AM-PM on State Route 104 at 2:47 a.m. The driver left the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager idling in the parking lot while she delivered newspapers inside the store.

Fifteen minutes after the theft was reported, a second newspaper delivery driver spotted the stolen van traveling south on Suquamish Way. The driver the van as it turned west on State Route 305 and sped up to 90 mph.

In Poulsbo, the van turned onto Hostmark Street and then onto Noll Road, and drove back to southbound SR-305 where a Sheriff’s deputy and Suquamish Police officer joined the pursuit.

The van led law enforcement back through Suquamish and turned west on Columbia Street. Two more Sheriff’s vehicles joined the chase as the van followed Gunderson Road to Miller Bay Road.

On northbound Miller Bay Road the suspect dropped a bundle of newspapers which struck a deputy’s car. Back in Kingston, the van rolled through a red light and led deputies onto 288th Street toward Port Gamble. After several more turns, the van stopped on Woodside Road NE and the driver surrendered.

A records check showed the man’s license had been revoked, according to the Sheriff’s report. The man was arrested by a deputy and booked into Kitsap County jail on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, felony eluding of police and driving with a revoked license. Total bail was set at $50,000.

A deputy estimated the chase had covered 14.6 miles and lasted about 15 minutes.

Several bundles of newspaper and a newspaper box were missing from the van.
