KINGSTON — The Kingston Severe Weather Shelter is open Dec. 9.

The shelter is located in North Kitsap Fire & Rescue headquarters, 26642 Miller Bay Road NE.

Guests can arrive between 6-9 p.m.

The shelter is operated by a volunteer group called Kingston Cares.

The shelter was originally planned to be in the Kingston Community Center. However, there is maintenance that has kept that from happening.

The shelter opens any night where temperatures are expected to be below freezing, receive more than 1 inch of snow, or two days of more than 1 inch of rain.

There is a flood advisory for counties, including Kitsap, through Dec. 12, according to the National Weather Service. There is a wind advisory in effect from late Dec. 10 through Dec. 11.

Kingston is expected to receive winds around 20 MPH with less than a tenth of an inch of rain the afternoon of Dec. 9, according to the Weather Service. Winds are expected to drop to 7 to 13 MPH at night.

Winds are expected to pick up Dec. 10 and could reach 28 to 34 MPH, with gusts as high as 45 MPH.
