POULSBO — Little Norway’s planned sports complex is still a few months away from its ground breaking but new tenants are already set to move in.

Zero Gravity Dance Studio of Poulsbo and Studio Kicks Martial Arts Academy of Bremerton are the second and third companies to announce they’ll be occupying space in the tentatively-named “Kitsap All Sports Complex.” The facility will be located on a 5.4-acre lot across from North Kitsap’s Babe Ruth and Little League fields on Highway 3.

A grand opening of both facilities is slated for February 2005.

Zero Gravity Dance Studio owners and Poulsbo residents Kenda Saunders and Brianna Paul, who operate a wide variety of programs in cheerleading, dance and gymnastics, decided the time was right to make a move to a larger location.

“We grew out of this place,” Saunders said of the studio’s current 6,000-square-foot location on Jensen Way. “We simply need a bigger facility.”

Moving into the planned complex has many advantages, Saunders said, mainly because sharing a facility with other sports-related businesses will mean easier access for families.

“We’re really active in the community,” Saunders said. “And we chose this facility because it can be more for the whole family.”

The size of the current studio prohibits it from holding competitions. But a new facility would add 4,000-square feet and create an open area complete with surrounding balconies for viewing competitions.

“We can’t have anything big here (currently),” Saunders said. “We’ll actually be able to hold meets (at the new complex).”

The lack of competitive events kept the former Trek Gymnastics team from hosting large events, as well as the revenues such events bring from outside visitors and competitors. Saunders said she hopes the new location will create new profits for Zero Gravity — and for the local economy.

Landmark Properties owner and Bainbridge Island resident Doug Nelson, who has purchased the land, is planning to build two structures on the property. One 36,000-square-foot facility will be completely occupied by the already-announced, “Zone Sportsplex,” and will be equipped with two indoor turf fields, up to nine batting cages and a cafe with viewing areas.

The other complex will house Zero Gravity and Studio Kicks, as well as several other businesses yet to be announced.

The Zone Sportsplex, managed by Poulsbo resident Ted Thetford, has also announced that it is hiring Vinland Elementary School teacher Dave Walker as the Director of Diamond Sports.

“I think he’s an awesome fit because he knows the community well and played at Olympic College and he’s run the summer camps already in the area,” Thetford said.
