BREMERTON – After a month-long charity drive, corrections officers with Kitsap County Jail collected a couple hundred pounds of household goods and clothing, including 500-600 diapers, to donate to the Kitsap YWCA.

The drive was organized by corrections officer Scott Billingsley and his wife, Shannon. Divisions within the jail competed against each other to see which could could donate the most. Winners received Starbucks gift cards.

“I think it’s true with any law enforcement: make your community better as fast as you can,” Billingsley said. “Everyone wins when you help kids.”

The YWCA’s shelter houses women and children for up to 90 days. It only houses 15 at a time, but the YWCA helps about 100 people per month, according to Debbie Brockman, director of YWCA ALIVE legal advocacy and family services.

“People who come to use are starting over,” said Jackie Brown, director of YWCA ALIVE shelter and housing. “Everything that’s donated is used.” The Kitsap YWCA is located at 905 Pacific Avenue in Bremerton. To make donations call 360-479-0522 or  email info@ywcakitsap.org.
