On May 27, the Kitsap Forest Theater will open the curtains on its 84th season with a classic Broadway musical.

The theater, at 3000 Seabeck Highway in Bremerton, was built in 1928, making it one of the oldest outdoor theaters in the country.

Theater producer Gala Lindvall said she’s excited about the first show, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

“Fiddler On the Roof” is a musical about a Jewish community set in a Russian village in 1905. The main character, Tevye, struggles with keeping his five daughters on a traditional path while they seek more freedoms.

“The whole idea of tradition is what’s so exciting, we have a tradition at the theater of doing plays, and families that have come for generations to see our shows,” Lindvall said. “I think it dovetails nicely.”

For the actress playing the oldest daughter Tzeitel, the forest theater is part of her introduction to the community.

Sarah Walsh moved to Indianola in February with her husband, a Navy man who’s stationed at the Bangor Submarine Base.

Walsh grew up performing in children’s theater in Los Angeles, and has since lived in Boston and Hawaii before coming to Washington. She did some Googling to find the forest theater.

“It’s just magical, it feels very otherworldly,” she said.

It’s Walsh’s first time performing on an outdoor stage, and she likes the element of surprise it offers.
