Late summer and early fall has been a busy and fun time for our Kiwanis Club. Because of the generosity of friends from all over the area and neighbors in town and the S’Klallam Tribe, our Mustang Raffle was the most successful to date. This will allow us to add to our scholarship fund, support the Boys and Girls Club, and support youngsters and seniors throughout the greater Kingston community. A couple from Sequim won the Mustang, and memories of the first car they owned together turned into a special moment. The next car is a real beauty and ready to go! Don’t miss out. Look for tickets soon.
Our Halloween party will be located, for the second year, at the Health Services Center off of Barber Cut-off Road. This is great fun for kids and parents. Toy Lady (aka Judy Osborn) has overdone herself this year — more than 600 toys and books. It’s really magic to see all the toys in Dick and Judy’s den.
We had our installation dinner for new officers on Oct. 13. It was attended by a number of past lieutenant governors and club presidents from our district. New officers were sworn in by our new lieutenant governor, Tom Saunders, introduced by outgoing Lt. Gov. Roy Meyers. President Dick Osborn and Executive Vice President Pat Forman, Treasurer Kendall Hanson and Trustee Hal Hoover agreed to continue in their positions. New additions to the board are Mary Cockerham, trustee; Marylou Iverson, communications secretary; Eric Roth, reporting secretary; Jed “Duffy” Selter and Sheila Walters, co-vice presidents of communications. The highlight of the evening was when Peggy Orbea of the Early Irons Car Club presented a check to the club for $4,500 to help support the Boys and Girls Club.
Some of our members were also recognized at the installation dinner: Hal Hoover, for his service to the club; Dave Mueller, Distinguished Service Award; Judy Osborn, Christmas Toy Drive; and Pat Bennett-Forman, Mustang Sally Award.
It’s going to be a good year. I have been a member of Kiwanis for almost 30 years and I still get excited when I realize how much our club contributes to the community. We also have lots of fun and try to have a social event each month.
A drive to find new members that care about Kingston and want to get involved is going “full speed ahead.” Come and join us at the Oak Table Café at 7 a.m. on Thursdays and see us in action. The second Thursday of each month, we have our meeting at night at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club at 6:30 p.m. to encourage participation by folks that have a difficult time getting up early.
Please contact Dick Osborn, (360) 297-4693, or Bob Lee, (360) 297-4462, for information on joining a club that really makes a difference.
