Spring is here and before you know it, school kids will be out on their summer vacation. This is a great time for fun and family trips for many, but some of our local families will have a difficult time making sure the kids have enough to eat.
At Wolfle Elementary School, approximately 61 percent of students are on free or subsidized breakfast and lunch, and this service goes away during the summer.
The Greater Kingston Kiwanis and Kingston Rotary have banded together the last two summers to help alleviate this problem. Our Kiwanis Club decided to do something else this year to increase the money needed to support the program. We are sponsoring a play at the Jewel Box Theater in Poulsbo on April 6, 8 p.m., to raise money to help feed our kids this summer. It’s called “Bark,” and it’s a runaway smash hit musical that just moved from Los Angeles to the Northwest after rave reviews. It looks at life from a dog’s point of view and is hilarious.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Columbia Bank in Kingston; from Jane Mack, one of our members who chairs the committee; or by calling (360) 881-0678. If you can’t attend and still want to support the program, you can do that too. It will really go a long way to make sure our kids are able to eat properly this summer.
On another subject, many folks in the business community in Kingston would like to get involved in our projects but can’t get to meetings in the morning. The Pacific Northwest district of Kiwanis developed a way for businesses to be involved, support our projects, get recognition in Kiwanis International magazine (more than one million distribution), and our website. It costs $100 per year, and it’s tax deductible.
Participating businesses will get a decal for their window to let everyone know of their support of the programs for our children in Greater Kingston.
On Easter eve, March 30, we will have a food drive at the IGA and Albertsons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please, come on down and put some food in the baskets.
If you are interested in helping us with these projects, come down to the Oak Table Café from 7-8 a.m. Thursdays and join us. We are ready to start helping some of our senior neighbors with yard work, so the more backs we have the better.
Call our President Pat Bennett-Forman at (360) 697-4849; or me, at (360) 297-4462. We have lots of fun.
