Kiwanis scholarship applications due April 11

At this time of year, high school seniors anxiously await news that they have been accepted by their schools of choice. They also wonder what kind of financial assistance will be offered – what they get in scholarships and grants can make all the difference in which post high school program they ultimately attend, whether seeking a four year college degree or certification from a technical school. Fortunately, Kingston Kiwanis can offer assistance to these students.

Kiwanis scholarship applications are available online at the Greater Kingston Kiwanis website (greaterkingstonkiwanis.weebly.com). Scholarships are awarded annually to graduating high school students from the Greater Kingston area. Recipients are selected from applicants based on a demonstrated record of service to the community that highlights positive character, citizenship and self-reliance. While academic achievement is usually very evident in applicants, the scholarships are also open to students with less stellar records who have overcome obstacles during their academic career or merited special achievement.

Kiwanis is looking for students who, whatever their post-secondary plans, want to contribute to improving the world in their own small way. Students pursuing non-college, post high school education, such as technical schools, are encouraged to apply as well. Applications are due by April 11, 2020.

Scholarship funds are intended to assist in paying tuition expenses and are paid directly to the college or vocational technical school attended by the recipient. Kiwanis works directly with the university or other school to reduce the burden of tuition to the family.

The scholarships, to be awarded in May, are dedicated to the memories of “Bud” Meredith and “Cy” Wyse, founding members of the Greater Kingston Kiwanis Club, who lived a large portion of their lives in service to others in the North Kitsap Community. Cy, in particular, had a soft spot for students and contributed hours to the building of Kingston High School and the services it offers students.
