Student gets achievement recognition

Diego Diaz-Baca, a student at Fairview Junior High in the Bremerton School District, was recently recognized for his work in science by the U.S. Achievement Academy.

He was nominated by his science teacher Debbie Straub. He is the son of Jose Baca and Raelani Diaz of Bremerton.

The academy recognizes students based on their performance, interest and aptitude along with their leadership qualities, enthusiasm and dependability.

His name will appear in the 2014 U.S. Achievement Academy yearbook.

Bofinger graduates from ROTC leadership

Brianna M. Bofinger, an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet at Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Wash., graduated from the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The 29 days of training provide the best possible professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support.

Cadets usually attend LDAC between their junior and senior years of college, and they must complete the course to qualify for commissioning. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve.

She is a 2011 graduate of Central Kitsap High School.
