Next weekend, one direction of State-Route 16 will lose a lane at the Burley-Olalla interchange as crews will be paving a detour route around construction of new bridges for the dangerous intersection, the Washington State Department of Transportation reported.

According to the WSDOT, drivers can expect westbound SR-16 to have only one lane open beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, and until 12 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.

Drivers should expect delays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday when traffic volumes on the highway are the highest, and the WSDOT recommends drivers limit their travel during those times if they must drive that route.

About a month later, the work will move to the other side of the highway. Starting 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, one lane of the eastbound direction will be closed until 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15.

Once the detours are paved, eastbound and westbound traffic will shift off the main roadway and onto the detours, which will then become the new on- and off-ramps to Burley-Olalla Road.

Moving SR-16 traffic onto the detours will allow construction of new bridges over Burley-Olalla Road to begin.

Crews will reduce the speed limit to 40 mph through the work zone after traffic is shifted onto the ramps. The traffic shift and speed limit reduction will remain in place until the bridges are complete.
