Mark your calendars and make reservations now to attend Leadership Kitsap’s fourth annual leadership skill building event Feb. 20. Join other community leaders in a one day advanced training workshop “Engaging Challenging Conversations,” conducted by Greg Abell.
Many of our most significant leadership challenges show up in the context of change and conflict. A common characteristic of effective leaders is that of “vision.” This vision often involves individuals and teams changing so as to achieve some degree of improvement. At the same time we know that individuals and organizations often exhibit significant resistance to change. This seminar will explore the role of leaders in helping individuals and groups to successfully navigate these challenges. This workshop is appropriate for anyone who wants to increase their capacity both personally and professionally to effectively engage change and conflict. This would include mediators, attorneys, human resource professionals, social workers, and leaders who work in business, organizational and community settings.
Workshop Objectives:
• Identify the elements of difficult conversations and how they impact personal and professional relationships;• Recognize their role and responsibility in managing conflict situations;• Understand conversational styles and how to operate in stressful situations;• Learn a framework for approaching difficult conversations;• Practice skills needed for holding difficult conversations such as self-management, active listening, and asking intentional questions and effective disengagement
Greg Abell is a dynamic trainer and a senior partner with Sound Options Group in Washington State. He has served as a founding member and Board President of the Kitsap County Dispute Resolution Center, President of the Washington Mediation Association, and senior consultant to the Consortium for Appropriate Dispute Resolution in Special Education (CADRE). Greg currently serves as an advisor for the Leadership Kitsap Foundation. As a professional mediator, Greg has experience mediating highly contentious, multi-party community and institutional disputes. His practice as a conflict resolution professional is driven by a core belief that everything of importance happens within the context of interpersonal relationships.
The day-long workshop, on February 20, will get underway with networking at 8 a.m. followed by the training from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino.
