Leaky pipes may be cause of Kingston sinkhole

KINGSTON — The sinkhole that developed Monday evening on State Route 104, between West Kingston Road and Iowa Avenue and Ohio Avenue, fortunately did not cause any traffic-snarling conditions for commuters Tuesday morning, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Duke Stryker, maintenance superintendent for the department’s Olympic region, said crews had placed cameras under the asphalt to determine what caused the concrete to sink. As of Tuesday morning, Stryker said it looks like an enclosed drainage pipe system had been “separated.” The breakage in the pipes, about 8 feet beneath the surface, caused water to erode the road subsurface and break down the old asphalt.

All lanes are open as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, while the department determines how to fix the pipe and fill the hole.
