POULSBO — They’re not as mean as they look. And despite the fact that they wear horned helmets, thick furs and carry such weapons as battle axes and swords, Poulsbo’s Vikings are actually a pretty decent group.

How else could one explain their annual tradition of braving the often windswept waters of Liberty Bay in a small row boat in order to deliver one of this city’s most anticipated holiday gifts — the Lucia Bride.

Little Norway will be keeping with its age-old tradition on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. when the haggard bunch and the lovely bride are set to land at the Poulsbo Marina. From there the ensemble will make its way to the fire pit at Waterfront Park where St. Lucia herself will set the festivities ablaze as she lights the ceremonial Yul log.

The Yul log, which is brought here all the way from Norway, has come to symbolize the beginning of the Christmas season in Poulsbo.

The event will also feature a visit from that jolly old elf Santa Claus, the annual Christmas tree lighting and songs from the Kitsap Christmas Carolers.

But the holiday season in historic downtown Poulsbo doesn’t end there and actually got underway yesterday when Father Christmas and the Giving Tree made their annual debut at Bad Blanche. The two will be present on Front Street every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. until Dec. 23. Also, kids hoping to make their holiday dreams come true can drop a letter or three in Santa’s mailbox, which will be accepting wish lists for the North Pole until Dec. 23.
