Local school board members will elect member of state Board of Education

The state Superintendent of Public Instruction will conduct an election in November for Position 4 (Western Region) on the state Board of Education. The position is a four-year term beginning the second Monday in January.

OLYMPIA — The state Superintendent of Public Instruction will conduct an election in November for Position 4 (Western Region) on the state Board of Education.

The position is a four-year term beginning the second Monday in January.

Deadline for declaration of candidacy are available at www.k12.wa.us/ProfPractices/adminresources/SBEelections.aspx. Deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 30. Mail Declaration of Candidacy to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, P.O. Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200.

The state board is composed of 16 members:

— Two from Eastern Washington, elected by public school directors.

— Three from Western Washington, elected by public school directors.

— One member at large, elected by approved private schools.

— Seven members appointed by the governor.

— Two student representatives elected by the Association of Washington Student Leaders.

— The superintendent of public instruction.

Candidates must be residents of the region they wish to represent. They cannot be employed by any public or private school, college, university or other educational institution, any educational service district, or the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction after being elected to the state board. Persons elected to the board may not concurrently serve as a member of a public or private school board.

Ballots will be mailed by Nov. 9.

The state Board of Education helps develop educational programs and provides leadership, support and advocacy, through policy, to help students achieve success in school and life.
