The independent film “A Beautiful Thing” by Himesh Bhargo will be premiered April 24 at Olympic College in Bremerton.

Bhargo, who grew up in New Dheli, came to Port Orchard about five years ago with his parents to visit family and eventually enrolled at Olympic College where he studied filmmaking.

Bhargo’s earlier award winning films include “Faded Sight,” a short documentary about the dangers of drunk driving, and “Jurisdiction,” an action film that premiered at the Admiral Theatre a couple of years ago.

“A Beautiful Thing,” an Indie Fest Film Awards winner, features Olympic College students and tells the story of a man who is socially awkward, but believes that he will one day find true love.

“It’s not a love story, but it’s a story about love,” Bhargo said, noting that it will appeal to people who like dark movies, thrillers and horror films.

The film was shot in Port Orchard and Bremerton, but most of the wide shots, aerial shots and parts of its music video were shot in Seattle, Tacoma and La Push.

The film was edited at Bhargo’s Hyper Effects Production office in downtown Bremerton. Bhargo plays the lead in the film. Other local actors that play roles in the film include Ingrid Bright, Giselle Bright and Grant McMeekin.

Bhargo said he was reluctant to enroll in college, but his parents eventually helped convince him. It was there that he discovered a passion for acting.

“Let me tell you a secret about Indians,” he joked. “Everybody wants to be a film star because of the big Bollywood.”

But Bhargo soon realized that acting is not easy and opportunities are hard to come by.

“As I got into, I found out it’s not as easy as it looks to become an actor because there are a lot of people trying to do it,” he said. “There’s so much competition. I found out how hard it is because it takes all of your emotions. It takes all of your emotions and crushes them. There are days when you are the happiest person in the world, but on screen you have to be sad.”

Bhargo also came to realize that he could produce, direct and act in his own films.

“I’m crazy about making movies,” he said. “This is it. This is my life now. There’s nothing that I would rather do. I wish everyone could find this in their life. I wake up every morning and the day after a shoot it’s like heaven. I’m living. I’m doing what I love doing.”

Bhargo said that he learned a lot at Olympic College, but for him, the biggest gains have been made while actually making movies.

“I could be learning a million things in class, but when I’m actually out doing it, I’m learning a trillion things,” he said.

And, there’s still a lot more to learn, of course.

“The best thing that can happen to you is failures because you learn so much,” he said. “If you’re successful in every shoot, it’s not as good as failing in a couple of shoots and re-doing it and re-doing it. Because through those failures you learn so much.”

Before “A Beautiful Thing” was a wrap, Bhargo was already planning and working on his next project. “Soulmates,” a romantic film, is nearly complete, he said.

The “A Beautiful Thing” premier will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, at the Bremer Student Center at Olympic College.
