Four Kitsap County juveniles were detained and questioned by Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers Thursday afternoon after an all-night joy ride in a stolen car.
A trooper was on Silverdale Way and Bucklin Hill Road Thursday when he received a LoJack signal indicating there was a stolen vehicle in the area. The LoJack system is a small radio frequency transceiver hidden inside a vehicle. When a theft is reported to police, an entry is made into the state police computer system, which activates the LoJack system, according to WSP.
With assistance from troopers on the ground and a WSP aircraft equipped with a LoJack receiver, the stolen Hyundai Accent was located abandoned in a parking lot on Anderson Hill Road in Silverdale, according to WSP.
The car was reportedly left in the Kitsap Mall parking lot Tuesday night and when the owner returned around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, the vehicle was gone.
Two teenage boys allegedly took the vehicle after the owner left the ignition key inside. They drove around all night, causing damage to the car estimated at $500, according to WSP.
On Wednesday morning, the teens reportedly met up with two other teenagers.
After troopers found the car, they contacted the owner to tell him the vehicle had been located. The four teenagers walked up to the car, oblivious to the state patrol vehicles in the parking lot, and tried to get inside, according to WSP.
The troopers and a Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputy took the four teens into custody and two of them may face felony charges. Charges will be referred to the prosecutor’s office on two of the teens for theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and malicious mischief. All four teenagers were released to their parents.
