Kitsap Community Resources is accepting applications for its weatherization program and now is a good time to apply in order to receive free services before winter.

These services may include air sealing; insulation of attics, walls, and floors; duct sealing and insulation; water heater tank wrap and other general heat waste measures. Residents usually save an average of 20-30 percent on their monthly heating bills after receiving weatherization improvements, an average savings of $600 per year.

Kitsap Community Resources has been saving energy and reducing related costs for low-income Kitsap residents for 30 years through its weatherization program. The goal of weatherization is to improve the energy efficiency, safety and comfort of low-income homes. This is a free program for homeowners and renters who qualify. Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act significantly raised the eligibility from 150 percent to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, meaning a family of four that makes up to $3,675 per month will now qualify.

“Over the years, research has provided weatherization with new technology that allows us to apply conservation measures in a home that has shown a significant savings for the families,” said Darlene Cook, KCR Housing and Community Support Services Director. “Some have seen over $1,200 a year in savings that they can use elsewhere in their budgets.”
