Unopened mail — all addressed to service members stationed at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor — was found scattered in the road around the area of Callahan Drive and Magnuson Way July 3.
A 53-year-old Bremerton woman found the mail on the road and reported it to police at about 9:12 p.m. All of the found mail was enclosed in envelopes and appeared to be cards. The police officer was familiar with the Navy addresses on the envelopes and thought they were to those enlisted in the barracks. Most of the mail had out-of-state return addresses including New York, California, Hawaii and Arizona.
The mail was placed into evidence and the report was forwarded to NCIS for investigation.
