A 24-year-old man was charged Tuesday with first-degree robbery and attempting to elude police after allegedly assaulting a man and stealing his car at the Poulsbo Safeway Monday night, which led to a police chase to Bremerton.
According to police documents, dispatch advised of a vehicle theft that quickly turned into a robbery at the Poulsbo Safeway. A witness reported they saw two people fighting over the car. Further reports indicate that the driver was grabbed, assaulted and struck multiple times. Police said the victim showed obvious signs of injury and was distraught.
The victim told police he had recently recovered his vehicle, an older green Honda Civic with a bungee cord holding the trunk closed, earlier that night after police located it at the nearby Central Market parking lot. He had come over from Seattle to retrieve his vehicle and then drove it to the Safeway gas station.
While at the pump, the victim said he was approached by a man who began screaming at him, claiming the car was his. The man, later identified as Jordan Brooks, then allegedly grabbed the victim out of the driver’s seat, threw him to the ground and put him in a headlock. The victim got up to defend himself, and a fight ensued.
Brooks allegedly struck the victim multiple times in the face and then jumped in the driver’s seat and started driving the vehicle, dragging the victim about 30 feet.
The police report states the victim sustained an abrasion and contusion to his left cheek and a cut to his chin. He was also bleeding from both palms of his hands, and the entirety of his lower back was bleeding from being dragged.
Police continued to pursue the vehicle until it crashed near the Manette Bridge in Bremerton. During the chase, Brooks allegedly drove recklessly at about 110 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone on Highway 3, swerving through oncoming lanes of traffic.
The pursuit lasted over 10 minutes and was about 10 miles in length. Brooks eventually stopped at Pitt Avenue and Harkins Street in Bremerton after failing to make a turn at a T intersection. Brooks fled but was quickly arrested.
