PORT ORCHARD — One trial has concluded in a pair of cases accusing two men of kidnapping another man and raping him in a Kingston basement.
Lance Nation Averett, 43, of Kingston stood trial on March 31 for the charge of first-degree rape. Averett, along with Tandy Lucas Murphy, was accused of kidnapping a hitchhiker in 2011. The incident allegedly progressed to a rape using S&M torture equipment.
Averett initially pleaded not guilty, but instead made an Alford plea on March 31 to amended charges of unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation.
With an Alford plea, the defendant contends he or she is innocent, but that the evidence would likely lead to a guilty verdict beyond a reasonable doubt.
Averett is scheduled to be sentenced on June 2.
Murphy, 53, of Kingston still awaits his trial on May 19 for a case stemming from the same crime.
