The Manette Bridge will close at 9 a.m. Sunday to vehicles permanently, and to pedestrians for two weeks, in order to prepare for the opening of the new bridge that the state Department of Transportation expects to open in mid-November.

The department hopes the bridge will reopen to pedestrian and cyclists by Aug. 7.

Prior to the closure, there will be one last ride for those with classic cars — and crossing for pedestrians — hosted by the department, Bremerton elected officials, the Manette and Kitsap Historical Societies and community members.

Owners of classic cars need to arrive at the parking lot of Evergreen Park by 7:30 a.m.

Traffic access to the Bremerton bridge will be stopped in both directions at 8 a.m.

Participants are welcome to gather in downtown Manette from 7 to 10 a.m. for a pancake feed. The plan is to have the last car to cross the bridge be ridden by Mary Lou Slaughter, the Great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Chief Sealth and June Jarstad, wife of former Mayor Glenn Jarstad, who walked over the bridge at its 1930 grand opening.
