Man’s hair singed, family displaced by fire on Miller Bay Road

A fire, which started shortly before noon Thursday, severely damaged about 50 percent of a house on Miller Bay Road near Orseth Road. Crews from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to the fire to find half of the approximately 800-square-foot double-wide house in flames.

KINGSTON — A man’s hair and eyelashes were singed and a family was displaced when a home sustained serious damage in a fire Thursday morning.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department crews went to the scene, near the intersection of Miller Bay and West Kingston roads at about 11:45 a.m. A motorist driving along Miller Bay called 911 after the home’s occupant flagged him down. This caller and others reported seeing heavy smoke through the trees.

The first unit on scene came from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue’s nearby headquarters station, and arrived less than four minutes after dispatch.  They reported flames coming from one end of the older, 20-by-40 manufactured home. Traffic along Miller Bay Road was disrupted during the incident; a lack of usable shoulders in the vicinity of the fire scene forced crews to partially block the busy road’s southbound lanes.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze’s progress quickly to preserve the main structure but not before the fire destroyed about half of the home’s contents. Much of the home suffered smoke and heat damage. But two rooms on the opposite end of the house were nearly free of damage as they were protected by closed doors and firefighters’ fast work.

The man told crews that he’d been asleep in the home at the time of the fire. His mother was at work. The man refused medical treatment and was reportedly too shaken to provide officials with more information about the blaze.

An investigator from the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office went to the scene and determined that the fire likely originated in the young man’s bedroom. The exact cause remains under investigation.

It was unknown if the property is insured. The American Red Cross went to the scene to provide assistance to the man and his mother.
