McCormick Woods residents will be getting a mini-police station right in their own backyard.

The Port Orchard Police Depart-ment recently signed a lease agreement with McCormick Woods Golf Course for space to put their new substation.

The substation will be located in the new maintenance facility with quick access to the McCormick Woods residential area, the Ridge residential area north of Old Clifton, as well as the Sidney and Sedgwick business area.

The substation will not be staffed so it will not be open to the public. The office space is designed to give officers a location where they can get out of their car, have workspace to complete necessary reports, and have telephone access without having to drive back to police headquarters.

Dick Davis, Dick Ziglar, and Dick Peterson (active proponents of the annexation of McCormick Woods into the city of Port Orchard) said, “One of the goals of annexation was to create a consistent police presence in our community by locating a substation here in the Woods.

“While the initial efforts were unsuccessful Police Chief Alan Townsend kept that goal in his sights and with the cooperation of Shawn Cucciardi, owner of the golf course, and the persistence of Townsend, we now have a solution in hand.”

During the next few weeks, staff will be outfitting the substation with necessary computer equipment, office furniture, and electronics. After that is completed the facility will be in use by the department. The equipment for the substation was paid for by a federal grant.

“We are pleased to be able to meet our original commitment that we made to the residents of McCormick Woods and the Ridge,” Townsend said. “From the very beginning, we knew the importance of having a strategically located office in the west part of the city to help serve our residential and business communities on that side of the freeway.

“This will help ensure our continued quick response times to calls for police service and it demonstrates our continued commitment to community based policing.”
