As a recap of Port Gamble Country Christmas, we want to thank Ferrell Gas and Pope Resources as sponsors of our fireworks show and Boom Town Fireworks for a fabulous job — we look forward to 2012.
A huge “thank you” to all the businesses in Port Gamble for supporting the events that are held in Port Gamble and for all the visitors who shop and eat in Port Gamble and the locals who continue to support the businesses.
Two items that I would like to highlight from our fun-filled weekend was our annual Fruitcake Contest and Santa’s Workshop! We were excited to have as our guest judges Gregg Olsen, author of the “Empty Coffin” series and book “Envy” (which takes place in Port Gamble); Eric Ellis, district manager of Ferrell Gas; and Eric Ayala, hotel director.
Our winner was William LaVigne of Port Orchard. William has been making fruitcakes for 30 years, and his son Vern and his family have been involved in helping him bake the fruitcake for the last 14 years. This past year marks the 75th anniversary of the family’s fruitcake tradition, which dates back to 1933 when William’s grandmother started it in St. Maries, Idaho. Congratulations to William and family!
Santa’s Workshop, which was held in the Walker-Ames House, was a first for Country Christmas. The Port Gamble staff transformed the house into a place for children and their parents to have their photos taken with Santa and the children made up to six craft projects that they kept or gave as a gift to a loved one. We were pleased to have more than 700 children pose with Santa!
All of us survived the holidays and the winter storms brought to us in January. It is now time to indulge in chocolate and love; it must be February. We are pleased to announce another children’s workshop: The Children’s Valentine Workshop. The Valentine Workshop is scheduled for Feb. 11, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Walker-Ames House.
Bring your children, grandchildren, niece or nephew to create a Valentine gift for families, friends or your favorite teacher. For just $5, you will be able to make three craft gifts. For more information, please call (360) 297-8074.
