Partnering for youth Achievement, a ministry of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and Emmanuel Apostolic Church are sponsoring a Community Mental Health Awareness BBQ from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, at Bremerton’s Kiwanis Park.

Organizers note that one in three people with diagnosable and treatable mental illness never seek help due to fear of judgement and isolation.

Pastor Richard Johnson from Mt. Zion has been working with various community leaders to spearhead the event, which is hoped to evolve into an annual event aimed at informing the public about mental health issues.

The free event will feature food at no cost, information about mental health and various fun and educational activities.

The barbecue is aimed at folks who know someone suffering from mental illness, whether they be a friend or family member. People suffering from depression or other issues are also encouraged to attend to meet with professionals and get resources to improve their lives.

Other groups and individuals involved with barbecue include the Salvation Army, Bremerton FoodLine, the Bremerton Police Department, House of Refuge, New Day Ministry, Cammy Lewis from the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office, Kitsap Mental Health and WHAM, a women’s group from Mt. Zion.

Kiwanis Park is located at 1701 Fifth Street in Bremerton.
