An Olalla woman reported missing by her family Friday morning was discovered after a woman walking her dog spotted her car down an embankment along Nelson Road SE, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said that Sandra L. Kelley, 55, was found deceased inside the 1984 Dodge Ram pick-up she was driving eastbound on Nelson Road after the woman saw the vehicle about 20-feet down.

“I don’t think anyone driving by could have seen it,” Wilson said, explaining that deputies began looking for Kelley Friday after her family reported her missing. “A deputy drove her expected route home.”

Kelley’s family told deputies they had last had contact with her late Thursday afternoon when she called to say she was running an errand in Gig Harbor, but did not return. Wilson said she was not reported missing until the following morning.

Deputies then began the process of tracking her cell phone, which he said requires court documents, and checked with local hospitals along with traveling her driving route.

Wilson said the stretch of road where Kelley was last driving — the 5900 block of SE Nelson Road near Wiley Lane — does not have guardrails or other barriers that the truck would have had to crash through, and that could have indicated the car’s location.

He said investigators are still trying to determine why the truck left the roadway, and whether speed or intoxicants played a part in the crash.

“That part of the road is pretty straight,” he said.

According to investigators, after crossing the centerline, the truck traveled in the westbound lane of traffic for nearly 200 feet before drove down the embankment, stopping when it struck a tree.

Kelley was the only occupant in the truck, and had been wearing her seatbelt. He said based on the damage the truck sustained, it is not likely she survived the initial crash.

Wilson said the investigation is ongoing.
