The South Kitsap house explosion Feb. 23 triggered alarms and activated fire sprinklers at Mullenix Ridge Elementary, which sits across SE Soholt Lane from the destroyed structure.

Michelle Reid, school district superintendent, said a number of windows at Mullenix Ridge were blown out at the south end and on the building’s east side. Reid said those windows are quickly being repaired or replaced.

“I will say that the fire department went through and checked the air quality of the building before we let any students or faculty enter,” Reid said.

No toxins in the air were found inside the school. The district also sent a structural engineer to the school to complete a thorough review of the building. She said the engineer gave Mullenix Ridge a clean bill of health.

Reid said some dust was kicked up in the building by the blast but was removed that morning.

The district emailed a letter to student families Tuesday afternoon outlining the steps the district took to ensure the safety of students and faculty before the they arrived for class that morning.

While the building is safe and minor repairs are being made, Reid said the loss of life from the explosion is “heartbreaking.”

A couple residing in the house died in the explosion.

“We are keeping family and friends of the couple in our thoughts and prayers.

“We are a tight community,” Reid said in the letter to parents, “and the misfortune of any one of us touches all of us.”
