PORT ORCHARD — On Saturday, April 28, three Kitsap County law enforcement agencies will provide county residents with an opportunity to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, as the activity is known, will be hosted locally by the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office at four locations, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28, where residents can drop off those surplus medications.
Here are four participating locations:
- Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, 614 Division St., Port Orchard, at the courthouse campus.
- Kitsap County Sheriff’s Patrol Precinct, 3951 NW Randall Way, Silverdale, between Haselwood Family YMCA and Walgreens.
- Bainbridge Island Police Department, 625 Winslow Way E., Bainbridge Island.
- Suquamish Police Department, 18490 Suquamish Way NE, #105, Suquamish.
Only prescription and OTC medications will be accepted. All solid medications and non-injectable liquids, such as liquid Tylenol, also will be accepted. Drugs must be in some type of container or bag.
The following drugs will not be accepted: Fentanyl in any amount or form; insulin; and illicit substances, such as methamphetamine, heroin or marijuana. Syringes and medical waste also will not be accepted at the sites.
The Sheriff’s Office said that the take-back program is anonymous. Those turning in medications can do so without having to provide any information.
This event, organizers said, is in addition to, and complements, the permanent drug take-back program now ongoing in the lobbies of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Port Orchard and Silverdale offices. The two offices accept items during open weekday business hours.
This special event on April 28, however, allows for residents to dispose of unwanted medications on a weekend day.
Coincidental to the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the sheriff’s office in Silverdale is also staging an open house event on the same day. Sponsors urge residents to stop by for a tour of the sheriff’s patrol precinct after dropping off unwanted drugs, visit the K-9 teams, climb inside a MRAP tactical vehicle and observe demonstrations.
Additional open house events have been planned at the following sheriff’s office locations:
- Port Orchard, 614 Division St., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 5. Visitors are invited to tour the jail.
- Kingston, 26076 Illinois Ave., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 12. Meet deputies onsite who serve the community.
