Naval Base Kitsap is slated to receive $223.7 million from the 2010 military construction budget, according to U.S. Sen. Patty Murray.
Murray, a member of the Senate Military Construction Appropriations Subcom-mittee, announced earlier this month $398.8 million will be coming to military installations across the state to make improvements that “facilitate training and care for service members and their families,” according to a news release. The funding was included in the 2010 Military Construction Appropriations bill.
“Our state’s military installations are the backbone of our country’s defense, our communities’ economic well-being and our service members’ training,” Murray said. “This bill doesn’t just make physical improvements to our state’s bases, it invests in improving the quality of life for our service members and their families. This funding will help create jobs, get local economies moving and ensure that Washington state remains home to some of our country’s very best military facilities and service members.”
The money slated for Naval Base Kitsap includes $69 million to continue work on an aircraft carrier pier at NBK-Bremerton and $154.7 million for two projects on Bangor.
The joint venture Nova Group/Tutor-Saliba of Napa, Calif. is demolishing and replacing the aging Pier B in Bremerton. They were awarded the $124.5 million contract in May 2008 and the $69 million is the second of two payments, according to Cmdr. Manny Bautista, operations officer for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest.
The project is currently 25 percent done, with a completion date scheduled for January 2012.
The Bangor projects are a waterfront security enclave and a production and storage complex.
The enclave project will receive $67.4 million and provides a new security system enclave encompassing areas along the waterfront. A fence system, entry control points, road modifications and other support facilities will be constructed.
The contract for the waterfront security enclave is expected to be awarded early in fiscal year 2010, Bautista said.
Kiewit-General, of Poulsbo, is working on the $237 million production and storage complex at Bangor. They were awarded the project January 2008.
They are receiving $87.3 million, the sixth of seven increments.
The project is 32 percent finished, with a completion date scheduled for November 2011.
The facility is a multilevel, reinforced concrete structure and includes vehicle access, support buildings, a lightning protection system, grounding system, utilities, an observation tower, perimeter fencing, roadwork and other improvements.
