Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) began the New Year with the arrival of the first baby born at Northwest Beginnings Family Birth Center.

Lisa and Master-at-Arms Second Class David T. Vally celebrated the birth of their daughter, Kayla Fumiko, who was born Jan. 1, 2009 at 12:04 a.m. She weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 16 inches in length.

Lisa is a native of Torrance, Calif. and David is from Spokane. He is currently stationed at the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor Security Detachment.

Kayla is the Vally family’s first child. Both mother and baby are doing well.

“The staff here were amazing. Everyone did a great job for us,” David Vally said. “They made my wife very comfortable. Now we have a brand new baby girl.”

Even with Mother Nature blanketing the entire area with a white Christmas, Northwest Beginnings staff members were busy delivering babies. NHB recorded 20 births in the week between Dec. 18 and Christmas Day, Dec. 25, with seven new babies on Dec. 18 and five on Dec. 23.

“Everything went very smoothly for everyone involved,” said Cmdr. Janine Wood, Navy Nurse Corps, of Northwest Beginnings. NHB recorded 671 births for 2008, an average of almost 56 per month.
