BANGOR — Navy investigators searched through the night and into the morning, but found no evidence a man who fled from Poulsbo police officers late May 28 entered Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

“We dispatched multiple working K9 units,” base spokeswoman Liane Nakahara said at 10:40 a.m. May 30. “After searching throughout the night and into the morning, they didn’t find anything. They have stopped the search on base.”

The search for the man, who reportedly fled from a traffic stop in a car stolen out of Federal Way, occurred at the same time the base received a report of possible shots fired in a base housing area. Nakahara said Navy investigators searched but didn’t find evidence a gun had been fired, and they believe the report was unrelated to Poulsbo’s scene-fleeing suspect.

“It was a very busy night,” Nakahara said.

And it was a little unnerving, too, for some residents of a neighborhood next to the Navy base. A resident of Lakeness Road, where the stolen car was found, reported “there was a huge police presence in my neighborhood … They drove onto our property looking for a ‘white vehicle that had eluded police.’ Other neighbors outside were told to go inside. There was a helicopter searching for at least an hour.”

In the car, a 1974 Datsun 260, officers found a backpack full of loaded AK-47 magazines. No rifle was found; that gave officers some concern, especially with the report of gunfire on the base.

When the Datsun’s owner reported the car stolen on May 27, he said it contained 10 30-round and two 40-round magazines for an AK47, and about 400 rounds of 30-caliber ammo. He did not report that a gun was in the car.

The car owner reported locking and parking his car in his space at his apartment and, according to his father, “the next day he got up and noticed it was gone.”
