BANGOR — It could have been a gunshot. It could have been backfire from a vehicle. The Navy didn’t take any chances and locked down Naval Base Kitsap — Bangor early March 31.

The Trident gate was locked down as a precautionary measure after military personnel heard some suspicious “noises,” according to Public Affairs Officer Tom Danaher. The base will go through a security “sequence” before making any changes to the security status, he said.

The Trident gate is near Clear Creek Road.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said unconfirmed reports are that someone heard what was believed to be a gunshot or gunshots from outside the perimeter of the base. As of 10 a.m., Navy and sheriff’s investigators had not found any shell casings, and it’s possible the sound was backfire from a vehicle.
