POULSBO — With four weeks left in the select-soccer fall season, the NK Ambush GU15 soccer team is looking to regain the top spot in District 3. The girls have been playing tough while having fun, propelling a 7-1-2 record in the highest level of District 3.
Ambush started the fall season with five wins including three shutouts in the early part of October. But after a loss to Kent Spirit Oct. 23 and a tie at home against FC Milan, Ambush has been bumped to second place.
“Finishing,†said head coach Darryl Wilder of what’s left to improve, noting that the girls need to work on converting their shots on goal.
Finishing the season is the main priority in order to climb back to the top of the league standings. Kent Spirit 90 leads the way with an untarnished 7-0-3 record, while Ambush is solid in second at 7-1-2.
Back on Oct. 23, NK fell to Kent in a loss which “the girls knew they probably should’ve won,†Wilder said. “The Spirit had an exceptional game.â€
Three defensive mistakes allowed Kent three easy goals, paving the way for the 4-2 victory at NK’s Strawberry Field.
That loss broke a four-game winning streak for Ambush, which started the season with five wins and one tie. The Ambush secured big wins over the third-place Reign 90 White and No. 5-ranked Issaquah Spirit. MRSC Blitz Blue, ranked fourth, battled Ambush to a 2-2 tie in the second game of the season, and FC Milan accounted for the other Ambush tie.
“Milan was a very defensive team,†Wilder said. “They stacked their defense on us and we had some good opportunities but couldn’t finish.â€
Of the four games remaining, Ambush will have to play back-to-back next weekend in an attempt to play the games before North Kitsap’s grass is closed for winter. They will play Issaquah Spirit at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 19 and Revolution G90 at noon Nov. 20, both at Strawberry Field.
Ambush will then face Reign 90 and Blitz Blue in the final two games of the season. Blitz Blue and the Issaquah Spirit could be Ambush’s largest tasks Wilder said, noting that no team can be overlooked.
If the Ambush can muster the kicks to win-out the remainder of the season, Kent Spirit will be forced to do the same or surrender its spot. While Kent doesn’t face the opponent of back-to-back games this weekend, it will face some teams that presented problems in the early season. Issaquah Spirit poses perhaps the largest challenge; Kent will also play Reign 90 White and the Crossfire Premiere teams Barton and Jackson.
“Pretty much, we’re out of first place by one point,†Wilder said.
