PORT ORCHARD — After wet weather cancelled the first scheduled day of the Narrows League tennis preliminary round Monday at South Kitsap High School, John Henderson and Jackson Shaw rained on North’s hopes for a singles postseason push Tuesday.
Gig Harbor’s Henderson beat NK No. 2 Andrew Kilpatrick in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 while Stadium’s Shaw battled North’s Kevin Joines to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win as preliminary play resumed in South Kitsap.
For Joines — the lone senior of the 2006 NK squad — it was his final match as a Viking.
North’s No. 1 doubles team — juniors Joe McBurney and Jordan Tucker — avoided the preliminary possibility of elimination as its season record earned the duo an automatic berth into the League championship bracket. Play began Friday afternoon and will wrap up today at the University of Puget Sound courts in Tacoma.
North’s No. 2 doubles duo of Connor Gallagher and Jerol Bird will be joining McBurney and Tucker on the UPS squared asphalt, as they defeated the Stadium duo of Peter Chaffey and Walker.
After dropping their first game by the harsh count of 6-1, the Vikings rebounded to take the match with a 7-5 second set and 6-2 set to finish the Tigers off.
The NK sophomores faced Bellarmine Prep’s No. 2 team of Connor Gavin and Andrew Herron in the first round Friday, and McBurney and Tucker, grabbing the No. 7 seed on the championship bracket, took on Gig Harbor’s Cal Strelinger and Cody Manning.
Results were unavailable at press time, however, the Oct. 25 edition of the Herald will have a complete wrap up of the NK teams’ performances.
