POULSBO — If a baseball fan from North Kitsap were to watch the upcoming Wood Bat World Series in Olympia, he or she would see a lot of familiar players wielding unfamiliar weapons.
A North Kitsap team, composed of veterans of the North Kitsap High School team, has qualified to be one of the teams in the mix for the tournament title beginning July 29.
High school teams use metal bats, but the North Kitsap team has been using wood bats.
So far this summer it’s worked: The team won a tournament in Rainier Valley, took second in the Everett Wood Bat tournament in AquaSox Stadium and took second in the recent Firecracker Tournament.
“If you could bring together a perfect group, that’s what our team has been,” said Jon Gerhardt, who plays first base and outfield for the NK crew. “We have good team chemistry; we’re all good friends; we like being together.”
Head Coach Derrin Doty said it’s nice for the North Kitsap players to be able to show off their skills.
“It’s nice for guys that didn’t play too much in the high school season to have one more shot at it … it’s kind of their second chance,” Doty said.
The schedule for the Olympia Wood Bat tournament has not been announced, although it stretches from July 29 to Aug. 3, with games played at Capital High School. Teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana will play.
The team includes four Olympic College players. Several of the recent NK grads have announced that they will play at OC.
The team includes Derek Barker, Derek Deeter, Kevin Danford, Gerhardt, Patrick Gilbert, Mike Good, Brian Leibold, Peter Novotney, Josh Martin, Quinn Mouser, Daniel Peck, Eric Peterson, Peder Rauen and Nic Stearns.
Coaches are Doty, Matt Baker and Roger Gerhardt.
Doty hopes the team puts in a memorable effort in Olympia.
“We’ve got a solid team. No superstars, but solid all around,” he said.
