The North Kitsap girls’ tennis team’s match with Gig Harbor came down to the final competition between the team’s No. 3 doubles pairs, but the Tides were able to slip away with the win to hand North its first league loss Friday.
In singles, the Tides surrendered only four games over two matches. GH’s Laura Finley beat Kathleen Teefy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 spot and at No. 2, the Tides’ Alex Blakely won against Marie DeChamps, 6-1, 6-2. The Vikings roared back in doubles, winning at the top two spots. Erin Gallagher and Katie Oost beat the Tide tandem of Elizabeth Smyth and Chelsey West, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and Kelly Joines and Meagan Grandall defeated Faith Henderson and Kristne Helling of Gig Harbor, 6-4, 6-3. At 2-2 in match-play, Gig’s team of Mali Brynestad and Kaitlin Hildebrand were able to pull out the win, beating North’s Emili Kishi and Kearney Bangs 0-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Gig Harbor remains undefeated in league play; North Kitsap now moves to 4-1 in league and 6-3 overall.
Vikes’ fastpitch beats CK, SK back-to-back
The North Kitsap Vikings’ fastpitch team beat South Kitsap for the second time this year Monday at SK by the same score as the first — 2-0.
Heather Case pitched a complete game three-hitter, scattering the three singles and striking out nine along the way. Brenda Stice was two-for-three with a double, Jamie Heins was two-for-three with an RBI and Case had a triple and an RBI.
The team escaped with another win last Friday, beating the Cougars of Central Kitsap, 4-3. NK’s Coreena Stout got her first start of the year on the mound and earned the victory. Offensively, Stout and teammate Rachel Kramer went two-for-four and Katy Johnson was two-for-three with two RBIs.
North Kitsap (9-0 in league, 12-1 overall) can clinch a playoff spot with a win at Bremerton at 3:30 p.m. today.

“We had one of those days in the field where the ball played us and we didn’t play the ball,” Frease said.
On offense, Dan Peck went four-for-five with a double, Travis Tobin was two-for-four, Jared Prince was three-for-five with two doubles, Kevin Gartin was two-for-four with a double and Miles Thompson was three-for-four.
The loss is the Vikings’ first in league. North Kitsap (11-1 league, 14-3 overall) hosts Olympic at 3:45 p.m. today. A win clinches first place in Narrows League for the Vikes.
Lacrosse dominates Seattle Prep, 11-3
Megan Lockert and Katie Younger scored three goals each as the Kitsap Girls’ lacrosse team beat the Seattle Prep Panthers 11-3 Monday to stay undefeated.
Single goals were scored by Krista Burleson, Amanda Divyak, Havala Holmes, Sara Hall and Amie Wistrand. Bria Phillips also dished out seven assists for Kitsap.
