POULSBO — A “bagel†often refers to a tennis player’s victory when the score is 6-0.
Right now, the North Kitsap girls’ tennis team holds a bagel in a place that is more important than any of its individual matches: the win-loss column.
North is off to a 4-0 start with victories over Capital, Foss, Lincoln and — the one that is by far most important — South Kitsap.
The latest win was a 4-1 victory over the Wolves Wednesday, and though the Wolves were without their top player, state champion Stephanie Davison, a win is a win, coach Trish Olson said.
“This was an important match for us,†she commented. “I’m sorry to see that Steph couldn’t play. But we would’ve won anyway.â€
South Kitsap barely beat out North Kitsap a year ago for the Narrows Bridge title. The win this year is huge because the team that takes the Bridge carries three singles players and three doubles teams to the high school preliminary tournament — and as of now, the Vikings are in the driver’s seat.
The success continues to come from NK’s depth, a team that can have any of its varsity play in any of its positions.
“Everyone’s good on this team,†said Kearney Bangs, who, with partner Meagan Grandall, beat South’s Maria Smith and Chelsea Senter, 6-1, 6-2. “So we can compete really well with each other at practices.â€
“Everyone’s been pretty aggressive and has a good work ethic,†added Bangs’ partner Grandall. “We just need to keep working hard and stay focused.â€
Arguably the most competitive match of the day was at No. 1 doubles, where North’s Katie Oost and Erin Gallagher recovered from a break down in each set to win, 6-4, 6-4.
“So far, we’ve done really well,†Oost said. “We’ve come together a lot as a team.â€
Thus far, Oost has played doubles three times at the No. 1 position and singles once at No. 1. The senior and many of her teammates said each of the varsity’s players has the capacity to go alone or in tandem, making the Vikes a versatile team.
“I’m at the point where I’m comfortable playing either,†Oost said.
“If I play singles or if I play doubles, it doesn’t matter,†Gallagher said. “That goes for anyone on this team.â€
The only player who has stayed mainly on the singles side is freshman Britt Seaberg, who is off to a roaring start — at No. 2 singles, she’s 3-0 and has only lost two total games this year.
Following spring break next week, North Kitsap’s schedule heats up with three league matches against Port Angeles, Olympic and Shelton.
“From here on out, they’ve got to be up to the challenge,†Olson said. “But they don’t cringe from competition, they don’t shy away from it.â€
“We’re off to a great start,†Olson added.
