POULSBO — A young mother and her daughter narrowly escaped injury last weekend while they were sleeping in the attic bedroom of their house on Noll Road.
Caroline Dibert, 24, and her 13-month-old daughter Finley Dibert-Burgwin, were sleeping when Dibert heard four gun shots outside, then heard the glass from one of the exterior light fixtures break. She then heard a car leave at a high speed before calling 911.
Deputies from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene shortly after 1 a.m. April 3 to find four bullet holes in the western wall of the attic bedroom, at the foot of the bed where Dibert and her daughter had been sleeping.
A bullet was found in a pillow that was between the wall and the bed. Several more bullet holes were found on the exterior walls on the south side of the house, including one in a stained glass window.
Kahlen Burgwin, the father of Dibert-Burgwin and Dibert’s boyfriend, was house-sitting on Bainbridge Island for the night and said there was no reason for someone to be shooting at their home.
“We feel pretty good about the fact that it was random and stupid,” Burgwin said. Both deputies and the family believe it was just kids trying to shoot at the exterior light that Dibert heard break. The light happens to be within the same area of the wall where the bed is located.
The family has lived in the house for less than four months, Burgwin said, noting only about 10 people had been over to their place and there was no reason for this assault.
“We haven’t had very many people over here that know where we live,” Dibert added. “We haven’t (ticked) anybody off.”
No one was injured.
Hood Canal Bridge fatality
A logging truck and motorcycle collided in the eastbound lane on State Route 104 in Jefferson County just before the Hood Canal Bridge April 6. Washington State Patrol was called to the scene around 5:18 a.m. and found the motorcyclist, Charles Virdell, 57, of Port Ludlow dead on the scene. Kenneth Fraker, 39, of Forks was the driver of the truck. The bridge was closed to traffic for nearly two hours. WSP is investigating the accident.
Three car collision on Hood Canal Bridge
Around 4 p.m. April 5, a three-car collision involving a Poulsbo man took place at the Hood Canal Bridge, according to a WSP report.
Ronald Ryan, 53, of Poulsbo was driving southbound on State Route 3 in a 1993 Toyota Camry with a boat trailer when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the northbound lane. He was then struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by Bruce Trent, 48, of Edmonds.
The boat broke free from the trailer while the car continued southbound and was struck by another vehicle, a 1993 Ford Aerostar driven by Anthony Kirsch, 38, of Port Ludlow.
Ryan was treated for injuries on the scene. Trent and Kirsch were not injured.
Ludy Clode, 74, of Poulsbo, was standing in the driveway of 30086 NE SR 3 and was struck by debris from the Camry.
Two crashes snarl Kingston traffic
Two separate collisions left four people injured and clogged up traffic between Kingston and Poulsbo April 5.
North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to the first incident on eastbound State Route 104 and Myrtle Lane around 1:20 p.m.
Three vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision. The occupants of the second vehicle were transported to Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton for possible back and neck injuries. The occupants of the other vehicles denied injury. Traffic was backed up on SR 104 for 40 minutes. WSP is investigating the incident.
Crews from both NKF&R and the Poulsbo Fire Department responded to a second incident on Bond Road between Calvary Lane and Port Gamble-Suquamish Road shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.
Crews arrived to find a late model Saturn that had gone down a 15-20 foot embankment and about 30-40 yards from the road.
The driver told firefighters she had been heading westbound toward Poulsbo. The driver and her child passenger were transported to Harrison Memorial Hospital for possible injuries. Firefighters credit the use of seatbelts and the child’s car seat with protecting the woman and child during the crash. Traffic was limited to one lane for about 30 minutes on Bond Road. WSP is also investigating the incident.
Boats in Kingston marina burglarized
Five boats were burglarized late last week, according to a Kitsap County Sheriff’s report.
Four were reported to be targeted sometime overnight between March 31 and April 1.
KCSO deputies found the burglars had entered the vessels by prying open the rear cabin door with a “screwdriver-like device,” the report said.
Items taken from the boats included computer, car stereo and radio equipment, a digital camera, a global positioning system, a flat screen television, a cell phone, a drill and gloves.
Deputies found dried vomit, two knives and several stains that resembled blood or vomit on one boat, which the owners insisted was not theirs, according to the KCSO report.
A fifth boat was found burglarized sometime between March 28 and April 2. The window next to the rear cabin door had been opened and several pillows, CDs, liquor bottles and money were taken.
There are no suspects at this time.
