As word of Kitsap County Commissioner Chris Endresen’s upcoming resignation spread through the North End, a sense of apprehension permeated the underlying sadness of her departure.

Endresen has championed numerous North End causes and issues during her three terms as a commissioner and her absence will definitely be felt, said Poulsbo Mayor Kathryn Quade.

“We had such a great relationship with her and the county,” she said. “We’re obviously going to miss her.”

Endresen’s announcement comes at a pivotal time for both the county and the city as both are preparing their plans for the next 20 years, she said.

“Her replacement is going to be critical to how we move forward,” Quade said.

Whomever commissioners Jan Angel and Josh Brown choose must be knowledgeable about all of the issues facing the county as a whole and the North End especially, she said.

Henden Electric, Inc owner Scott Henden who ran against Endresen in the last two elections said he hasn’t decided whether her decision to resign will cause him to try for the position in 2008.

“I think it will be for the best,” he said of her leaving the county commissioner position. “Two years ago I stated why I disagreed with her on things. It’s time to let sleeping dogs lie.”

“She was instrumental in acquiring the Point No Point wetlands and shoreline and also the Norwegian Point Park property,” said Hansville Greenway Association treasurer Sid Knutson, who has worked with Endresen as long as she’s been a commissioner. “Those are two major projects she did for Hansville. We are going to miss her.”

Endresen worked hard to get Suquamish and Hansville citizen advisory groups started to promote healthy community growth, each with its own objectives, said Hansville resident Fred Nelson, who serves on the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Committee.

“I’m hopeful that someone as dedicated and helpful as she was fills her place,” he said.

“First, I would like to thank Endresen for her service to the citizens in the north end of the county,” said Kingston resident Robert Knight. He and Endresen have clashed over issues in the past. “Regardless of political persuasion and the policy differences we share, she worked hard to progress her agenda and that is admirable… The KC Board of Commissioners won’t change much until after the ‘08 election. I’m sure the Dem’s will nominate someone just as hard left of center as Chris in order to continue their agenda.”
