North Kitsap School District has canceled most summer school classes this year to save an estimated $65,000. Classes will instead be offered online for grades 9-12 through North Kitsap Virtual Academy, the district announced by e-mail and on its Web site.
The school district will offer classes for students in grades 9-12 using the Aventa competency-based curriculum, with access to a mentor teacher. Classes, called “credit retrieval courses” by the district, will be offered in English (Levels I-IV), Algebra I & II, Geometry, Biology, Earth Science, Physical Science, American Government, American History, Economics, Geography, World History, and Health.
“It was not an easy decision to make because many of our older students rely on credit retrieval during the summer school program to graduate on time,” Assistant Superintendent Shawn Woodward said in the announcement. “We knew we needed to have an alternative plan in place to accommodate these students.”
Parents and students will be notified when online credit retrieval registration information is available.
The change will not affect district summer school programs for eligible extended school year special education students, Title I and Learning and LAP (Learning Assistance Program) students. Summer school programs funded by grants at Suquamish Elementary and Wolfle Elementary will also not be affected.
