OLYMPIA — This year, it’s North’s turn.
After finishing undefeated in the regular season, it was no surprise that the Lady Vikes came out on top of the standings at the Narrows gymnastics league meet in Olympia Feb. 4. But advancing into the state tournament after the district meet this weekend would be a first-ever for the purple and gold.
“There is some room for improvement which I like to see,†NK coach Kris Goodfellow said after the league meet. “We’ll continue to work hard this week and hope for the best.â€
Preparation has been North’s focus from the get-go, and it all paid off in postseason style last weekend at the Narrows League meet.
North blew the field away in team totals as they cruised to 162.35 while Port Angeles came in second with 137.65 and Olympia finished third at 137.4.
Improvement on the beam was once again a catalyst for NK success, Goodfellow said, as the team’s focus remains on refinement through the post-season.
“We did really well on beam again,†Goodfellow said, noting that the number of falls is decreasing. “Those falls rack up really fast, each time you come off it’s a half-point.â€
Whitney Glebe stayed solid at Olympia as she led the Lady Vikes with an 8.95 performance on the beam. She finished second, while teammates Kai Morrow, Aisha Shurick and Katie Bale locked up third, fourth and fifth respectively.
North also blocked out second through fifth place on the uneven bars as Bale flew to the silver spot with a. 8.7-point performance and Morrow, Glebe and Alice Pittack followed with 8.6, 7.4 and 7.35 respectively.
In the vault, Bale led NK with a sturdy 8.8 second-place finish, and Morrow locked up third with a score of 8.6; Pittack came in fourth with a 8.55.
“I think we’ll have some girls who will qualify on to state,†Goodfellow predicted. “Kai (Morrow) has a really good shot and I’m hopeful that a couple other girls can make it in.â€
Morrow captured North’s only first-place at the league meet as she shimmied to a 9.3 finish on the floor event.
Morrow was also the Lady Vikes’ top finisher all around as she clutched second place with a total of 34.10, while Bale finished third with 33.15 and Glebe came in fourth with 32.5. Lady Vikes Pittack and Shurick finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
“Of course, the competition at the distrcit level is really tough,†Goodfellow said. “There is just some phenomenal gymnastics that comes out of the West Central District.â€
North will be competing in a field of 20 teams at the West Central District meet in Federal Way this weekend and the pressure is on as only the top three teams will advance to the state finals.
The top 14 individuals of each event also qualify.
“There is that outside chance that we can make it into one of the top three,†Goodfellow said, adding that a near knockoff of last year’s state champion Bainbridge Island has boosted NK’s confidence. “It helped the girls to see there is definitely the potential of getting that third spot and on to state.â€
