SILVERDALE — A nurse and a Kitsap Mall mall security guard were honored for their quick efforts to help a man who had a heart attack April 22.

The man was at the mall around 6 p.m. that day with his wife when he clutched his chest and fell to the ground, suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.

Sarah Lee, a certified nursing assistant, was working nearby at a kiosk. She did a quick initial assessment and alerted another coworker to call 911 as CPR was started.

Mall security guard Ana Hernandez administered two shocks using an Automatic External Defibrilator.

CKFR personnel arrived at the scene a few moments later.

Lee and Hernandez were honored for their actions at the May 9 CKFR Board of Fire Commissioners Meeting.

Kitsap County has implemented the “PulsePoint” system into the emergency dispatch system, which can alert CPR-trained bystanders in the immediate vicinity of a public cardiac emergency so they can get to the scene and start CPR in the critical minutes before emergency medical teams arrive.

“It was an emotional reunion. This story had a happy ending and is a wonderful reminder as to why it’s so important to know CPR. Every minute counts,” CKFR stated.
