Theodore ‘Ted’ Spearman
Theodore “Ted” Ferdinand Spearman Jr., 64, of Bainbridge Island died Jan. 3, 2012, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1947, in Seattle and was adopted by Theodore Spearman Sr. and Nevada Letitia Jane Spearman of Yakima.
He married Marie Annette Mullenneix on May 16, 1969, in Palo Alto, California.
He was an attorney who practiced criminal and civil law in Detroit and taught as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School.
In 1983 the family moved back to Washington, where he continued his legal career. In 2004 he was appointed to the Kitsap County Superior Court, the first African American judge to serve in the court.
He enjoyed studying philosophy, reading, golf and music.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Simone Spearman (Jason Weaver) of Guerneville, Calif.; and a granddaughter.
A memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Suquamish Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitsap County Juvenile Youth Fund, the YWCA of Kitsap County’s ALIVE program or the Legal Foundation of Washington.
Neoma May Vancil
Neoma May Vancil, 89, of Port Orchard died Jan. 12 at Manor Care in Gig Harbor.
She was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Danville, Ill., to Ruby and Tony Frost.
She married Richard E. Vancil in Danville, and the family moved to Kitsap County in 1950.
She enjoyed the Seattle Mariners and playing Scrabble.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and a brother; a daughter, Karen Sue Schafer; and two grandsons.
Survivors include a son, Larry (Sharon) Vancil; two daughters, Barbara (Rick) Starkel and Betty (Don) Wells; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jay Lee Meyers
Jay Lee Meyers, 22, of Olalla died Dec. 22.
He was born Dec. 19, 1989, in Tacoma to Paul Meyers and Tobie Sparling.
He enjoyed wisdom, chemistry and philosophy.
Survivors include his parents; a son, Jay B. Meyers; four brothers, Scott Meyers, Taylor Bundy, Michael Sparling and Bailey Bundy; two sisters, Cayla-Maree Meyers and Tina McFaddin; and his grandparents.
A wake will be at 3 p.m. on Jan. 22 at his mother’s home in Olalla.
Sandra Sue Giard
Sandra Sue Giard, 68, of Port Orchard died Jan. 10.
She was born Nov. 5, 1943, in Bremerton to John Carpenter and Ethel Lehman.
She was raised in Port Orchard by Virgil and Ethel Lynam.
She enjoyed hosting family gatherings, traveling with her family, trips abroad and daily walks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Giard.
Survivors include a daughter, Robin (Matt) Worland of Port Orchard; a son, Richard Giard of Bradenton, Fla; a sister, Patricia Lynam of Belfair; a brother, Michael Lynam of Olalla; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. in Port Orchard, followed by a lunch.
